War Horse

I don’t think horses evoke the kind of emotions in me that they do in other people. If this had been War Donkey, I might have been a blubbering wreak by the end of it, but it isn’t and I most definitely wasn’t.

The are some very impressive scenes such as the cavalry charge and the over the top of the trenches bits but the rest of it is just a tad soft and squishy. The intentions are good, but it’s just little things get it the way. Such as really distracting terrible accents and one child actor.

One other highlight was the brief, well concealed appearance by Father Todd Unctious as the auctioneer at the start. His appearance in anything makes me smile.

Troll Hunter

Real life, found documentary footage of 3 students attempts to film mysterious happenings in the woods of Norway.

Once I got over the fact I wasn’t watching Blair Witch and was able to relax a bit more, and enjoy the lighter moments, this film really started to make a good impression. All the plays on troll mythology and the films attempts to scientifically explain them are pretty amusing. I won’t tag this as a comedy because I think that would be a little misleading but it’s almost there.

Quick look on IMDB has this classed as in development. Does that mean there’s a remake in the works, that I’m going to have to hate already?!

Arrietty

Stunning animation that at times is so perfect and entrancing I found myself ignoring the subtitles, just to take in the majesty of it all.

The only real negatives her are the occasional cheesy english language song on the soundtrack, complete with terrible lyrics. They sound like something may have been lost in translation.

Comparing this to Ponyo and the other high ranking Studio Ghibli features, it doesn’t quite reach the same levels of humour, excitement or plot. Still good stuff tho.

Bottle Rocket

Interesting to watch just to see how Wes Anderson got started on his directorial journey and look for the clues that would lead onto him producing films like Rushmore, Zissou and Darjeeling.

It’s an OK film, with some laughs and charm but not a patch on the films since.

Anthony: So, did you enjoy your first visit to the nut house?
Dignan: Hey, hey, shh, shh, shh. Come on. Be sensitive to the fact that other people are not comfortable talking about emotional disturbances. Um, you know, I am, I’m fine with that, but… other people.

Incidentally, yesterday Ben linked me to the new trailer for Moonrise Kingdom, due out later this year.
