War Horse

I don’t think horses evoke the kind of emotions in me that they do in other people. If this had been War Donkey, I might have been a blubbering wreak by the end of it, but it isn’t and I most definitely wasn’t.

The are some very impressive scenes such as the cavalry charge and the over the top of the trenches bits but the rest of it is just a tad soft and squishy. The intentions are good, but it’s just little things get it the way. Such as really distracting terrible accents and one child actor.

One other highlight was the brief, well concealed appearance by Father Todd Unctious as the auctioneer at the start. His appearance in anything makes me smile.

Max Manus – Man Of War

This has got to be bargain of the year, Liam picked this up for a couple pounds in the supermarket. I was a little cynical in respect to the title and the price that it would be a ‘garden shed’ war film made by some guys with some spare time and a handycam. This is a fantastic war film about the Second World War, and particularly the resistance in Scandinavia.

Its more of a Downfall than a Saving Private Ryan. Here there be great moments of tension, a likable/fallible hero, and well shot, edited film. Its ‘money’ which is ironic, because it cost pennies.

Patton

Patton is a bit epic really, as a film and a man. Very watchable, interesting at times really quite funny too.

Its a little surprising this is a PG rated film considering some of the battle scenes and strong language.

Couple tiny issues, it suffers from that hilariously cliched portrayal of the British, that especially older American war films tend to do, where the turn the “golly, spiff” up to 11, just to be certain the audience are exactly sure the character isn’t either American or German.

Another small distraction I found was that I was constantly thinking of Mr Burns and Smithers during some of the scenes of Patton and his, always eager to please, personal aid. Cant really blame the film for that.

Patton : In about fifteen minutes, we’re going to start turning these boys into fanatics – razors. They’ll lose their fear of the Germans. I only hope to God they never lose their fear of me.

Defiance

I could very easily get bogged down by the things that i didn’t like about this film, but that would distract from fact that its a good story, that I welcome learning about through the medium of film.

… ok, i cant help myself..

  • Daniel Craig’s acting is terrible, his attempt at an accent is horrendous.
  • Some of the scenes feel like I’m watching a school drama club rather than professional actors.
  • The editors seem to have over worked the picture with colour filters, or whatever they use, to the point it feels surreal and distracting.
  • Why do they speak in English, but its subtitled when there talking Russian?!
  • Daniel Craig is James Bond, What is James Bond doing in wartime Belorussia?!

Liev Schreiber was purdy good tho… he should have had a bigger part (sings).

Days Of Glory

Depiction of African soldiers fighting for the French in World War II. A lot of the focus being on the discrimination towards them by the country they were fighting for.

This is a really good 2nd World War film, I think its up there with Saving Private Ryan, Letters from Iwo Jima, Das Boot, The Pianist, Downfall and Pearl Harbor*

*not Pearl Harbor… nothing touches Pearl Harbor.

Waltz with Bashir

Really powerful film. Some issues with the animation but it kinda doesn’t matter by the time you get to the credits. Was wondering about half way throught why this was animated and not just filmed live action but it makes sense now. I wont say anymore.

Watched as the second part of a double header with The White Ribbon. From now on i’m only watching comedies one after another.. that was almost too much.
