True Grit (2010)

Everything about this film is quality, and its very hard to pinpoint any particular faults, but that said, in comparison to other Coen films its not even in the top 20%. The enjoyment levels really just cruise along rather than having any particular memorable scenes to shout about, that might demand extra viewings. The highlights that do come in this film, as with the best of the Coens’ work, are all in the dialogue.

I do not entertain hypotheticals. The world itself is vexing enough.

Sukiyaki Western Django

This is really indulgent and massively reference laden pure joy of a film. Feels like a Japanese love letter to all those great spaghetti westerns and then in turn to the works of Kurosawa, and then in turn.. Shakespeare.

The fact that Quentin Tarantino is in it is a good pointer as to the style and content of the film. I imagine that some people have problems with all the referencing of the referenced, I don’t, especially if its this entertaining.

True Grit (1969)

Viewed having watched the Coens take on it a couple of weeks ago, while it is good and in essence the same film, the combination of the cheesy soundtrack, overpowering presence of John Wayne and the complete lack of the Dude, just make this version slightly inferior.

…better CGI snakes tho!
